Is all stainless steel the same?
While various grades are suitable for brewing, the most prevalent choices are SS304 and SS316.
Stainless Steel 304 stands out as the primary grade used in brewing applications. Renowned for its corrosion resistance and durability, SS304 facilitates easy cleaning and sanitization. It finds use in crafting brewhouses, fermenters, bright tanks, piping systems, valves, and other components required to handle liquids at high temperatures or harsh cleaning agents.
Stainless Steel 316, on the other hand, is preferred for applications demanding superior corrosion resistance. This grade finds its niche in industries like pharmaceutical production, dairies, and breweries situated near the coast or utilizing brackish water sources. With heightened levels of nickel and molybdenum compared to SS304, SS316 not only enhances corrosion resistance but also strengthens overall performance. It finds widespread usage in heat exchangers and steam systems due to its enhanced thermal capabilities.
While SS316 is typically employed in breweries only when necessary due to its higher cost, it remains a dependable alloy offering extended service life for the additional investment.
